Ultimately, the optimism of Joyce and Gray testifies that the peripatetic city view, although disordered, allows a dynamic inscription of subjective meanings on the material reality, thus prevailing over any attempt to curtail its heterodoxy into a static one-dimensionality.Aldous Leonard Huxley (26 July 1894 – 22 November 1963) was an English writer, novelist, philosopher and a prominent member of the Huxley family. Conversely, Huxley's characters' panoptic vision of post-Fordian London fits an urban planner's dream of objectivity, linearity, and totalitarian order where walking, I would argue, amounts to a productive anarchy against the imprisonment of individuality. ![]() The city maze is as confounding as the puzzles of one's subjective existence. Therefore, as the wanderings of Stephen, Bloom, and Duncan Thaw demonstrate, the practice of everyday walking in the city and the trajectory walked are inextricably linked to the character's inner quest for self-identity. The analysis telescopes on the denizens' roles of walkers and spectators, with particular attention on cognitive mapping as vital for spatiotemporal orientation. It will compare the contrasting perspectives of the city as a fragmenting labyrinth and integrative panorama. This paper will aim to investigate Joyce's Ulysses, the paradigmatic urban novel, in juxtaposition with Huxley's dystopian Brave New World and Alasdair Gray's ambiguous Lanark on the theoretical basis of modern urban planning, environmental psychology, and De Certeau's analyses of modern urban living. This analysis investigates the effects of the nuclear bomb and disciplinary systems on humanity, and explores the ways through which humans have become dehumanized in Ape and Essence. ![]() Huxley shows after war, the totalitarian government employed disciplinary ways to control and manipulate people. In this interdisciplinary study, we observe dystopia in Ape and Essence as a consequence of Foucauldian disciplinary system. Thus, their goals and ambitions revolve around satisfying the State " s needs. Not only are their minds controlled by the disciplines, but also physical bodies are disciplined into submission and literally taken away from their rightful owners, as people are considered the property of the State. In Ape and Essence, Huxley indicates that people and their lives are highly controlled and regulated by the totalitarian State. In this dystopian fiction, Huxley illustrates a society in which the postwar government employs disciplinary systems to control and manipulate its citizens. The anxieties of WII stimulated Aldous Huxley to express his fear about the dark future of humanity through composing Ape and Essence. This is an interdisciplinary study to show human manipulation through Foucault " s concept of biopower in Aldous Huxley " s Ape and Essence (1948). I argue that Brave New World anticipates the Foucauldian paradigm of resistance, subversion and containment, ending in eliminating the forces that pose a challenge to the ideology of the world state. The world state eradicates love, religion, art and history and deploys language devoid of any emotions and thoughts to control the mind that judges and decides. I argue that Brave New World depicts a dystopian systematic control of mind and body through eugenic engineering, biological conditioning, hypnopaedia, sexual satisfaction, and drugs so as to keep the worldians completely controlled, collectivized and contented in a totalitarian society. ![]() In this paper, I discuss the manipulations of minds and bodies with reference to Foucault's biopower and disciplinary systems that make the citizens of the world state more profitable and productive. Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (1932) is a nightmarish depiction of a post-human world where human beings are mass-produced to serve production and consumption. Also begins his load a lot later and is more direct to the ball. His leg kick is smaller, hands are a bit higher, stays closed more. Only one swing, but definitely looks like Jasson Dominguez has made some mechanical adjustments. He’ll be bringing a new swing along with him, which appears to be more finely tuned for attacking strikes, and less prone to the “two true outcomes” of “home run or strikeout.” Turning 19 in a few weeks, Dominguez will likely play a more complete campaign in 2022, tackling full-season ball from the start and hopefully moving north to High-A Hudson Valley after some discernible progress. Wisened fans already knew we had done that (what even is a Mike Trout/Bo Jackson hybrid?!), but still believed there was a superstar in his skin, and his stateside debut wouldn’t matter much in the long run. Without an immediate “superstar flash,” a lot of people were left wondering if we’d overrated Dominguez’s potential. On the field, he entered a no-win situation and responded by triple-slashing. As the weather grew warmer, the cod liver oil separated from the livers and floated to the top. Bennett was “formerly president of the Parisian Medical Society, and of the Royal Medical and Royal Physical Societies of Edinburgh.”īennett notes that cod liver oil had a long history as a popular remedy in Sweden, Norway, Germany, Holland, Scotland, Britain, France and Belgium. The year 1841 saw the publication of the Treatise on the Oleum Jecoris Aselli or Cod Liver Oil as a Therapeutic Agent in Certain Forms of Gout, Rheumatism, and Scrofula with Cases, by John Hughes Bennett, MD. In 1824, a German journal mentioned cod liver oil as a remedy for rickets. Darbey described using cod liver oil as a remedy for rheumatism. The first notes on cod liver oil used for medicinal purposes appeared in 1789 in Manchester, when a Dr. As the steam from the boiling water rose, it began to cook the livers, and oil from the livers would drop into the pan. They brought water in a pan to boil and then placed birch tree branches on top of the pan the cod livers were put on top of the branches. The method used by the Vikings was actually a kind of steam extraction. Some types were used for oil lamps, ovens, leather treatment, paint manufacture, coloring processes in textile production, soap manufacture, tempering and lathing of steel, manufacture of explosives for the armaments industry, and industrial lubricants, while more carefully extracted versions were consumed as a food and medicine for humans and animals, or used as skin creams and healing ointments, and even as a lubricant for childbirth. ![]() Even as early as the Viking Age, cod liver oil brought prosperity as a chief item of trade with northern Europe, both for consumption and for industrial purposes. Since early human settlement in northern Norway, cod and cod products have served as the cornerstone of industry for the region.
